Moving to Austin

UPDATE: This was an April Fool’s Day prank.

I’m Gowalla-ing!!! I have decided to move from Southlake to Austin at the end of April.

After a comprehensive polling of my clients, the overall consensus was that Austin was the place to be so that I could properly scale my business.

I hope that I can assimilate in Austin successfully, even though I am a square. But I’m from Cali — and what is square in Cali is “weird” in Austin. So I should be OK.

Anybody have a reference for intrastate movers?

Come on down, Ryan. Our practice areas are vastly different, but as a Dallas transplant, I can tell you that Austin is a fine place to be. Lots of Californians here, too. Just watch who you strike up a conversation with about USC. This is UT homer-land.

Too bad for us. I don't know how we will replace you. Also, I thought you just bought a new house?

Anyway, good luck with it. Austin is a great place.

@ Todd – I'll make sure my office overlooks the Vince Young monument.

@ Matt – I'm breaching the contract on my house purchase and will be out $6k. :( You won't have to replace me since all Dallas startups move to Austin, anyways. See you soon!

    Ryan,

Austin is the right place to be. Better start-up climate than Southlake. I've been trying to make the move myself. Maybe I will see you down there. Good Luck! Sorry to see you leaving.

@ Matt – You are just in a haze from the pitching this week.

@ James – I'm not moving. Southlake is the place to be. There's never a good enough reason for a startup (or a startup lawyer) to move from Dallas to Austin. Never. (No offense to anyone or legal entity that made such a move; or anyone currently living in the Austin-Round Rock- San Marcos metro area.)

    • Matt Spradley April 2, 2010 at 1:27 pm #

Yeah. In my defense, I didn't know what day it was. Maybe that makes me an even bigger idiot.

Ryan, pretty funny how no one assumes lawyers can make April Fools jokes… of course, we've had this discussion many times about how.. um.. silly it is to move from DFW to Austin.

All you people who want to move should stop being so lazy and get involved with the people/companies that are working on building a great community here in Dallas – Fort Worth.

There are SO MANY awesome companies here, doing great stuff, there is absolutely no reason to go anywhere.

Well maybe a beer and some legal aid…. startups qualify for lawyer welfare, right?

Dude, as someone who made the move from Dallas (not Southlake, but close) to Austin, I totally fell for it. I'm going on a blog-reading holiday on April 1 next year.
